One of four programs in a series about simple organisms. This segment examines protists. For years, many scientists classified all living things as animals, plants or fungi. Certain microorganisms, while displaying characteristics similar to a number of these groups, didn't fit: protists, mysterious simple organisms. Describes the importance of the hard-shelled diatoms and the uses of the multicelled kelp. Introduces the most complex single-celled organism of all, the paramecium. Looks at the plant-like and animal-like characteristics of the protists Euglena.
