The film opens with three dramatizations of chance occurrences that most people would deem as just one of those things or coincidences. This is a series of interlocking stories. Bad dads Jimmy Gator and Earl Partride are both dying and estranged from their children. Earl's wife is having a breakdown. A coke-sniffing, self-esteemless girl and an unappreciated cop fall in love. Among the other ideas that surface are understanding when to help, rather than punish, and making amends for past mistakes.
