John and Cornelius de Witt, after years of effort, had perfected cultivation of a black tulip. The Haarlem Society of Tulip Growers, because of jealousy, bought the famous tulip and proceeded to destroy it, lest someone should be able to say that a humble amateur had succeeded where so many professional growers had failed.
