Biographical or Historical Data:
The Harmony Society, led by George Rapp, came to the United States from Germany in 1804 and settled in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The Harmonists were religious Separatists who pursued Christian perfection through every aspect of their daily conduct. In 1814, the Society purchased 20,000 acres along the Wabash River in what is now Posey County, Indiana. Members of the Harmony Society, also called Rappites, established Harmony (or Harmonie), a self-sufficient community that produced a wide variety of goods. After ten years, George Rapp decided the colony should move again and sold the community in 1825 to Robert Owen, who established another utopian society called New Harmony.Sources:Arndt, Karl J.
