This collection contains a variety of items related to Orange County, Indiana. Folder 1 includes a circa 1887 French Lick Springs Hotel advertisement card; two copies of a paper on the hills and waters of Orange County given by Anna Maris at the Indiana Library Association convention at French Lick in October 1923; two 1926 letters sent to Mrs. Noble Cox of Indianapolis and written by Jesse M. Trinkle of Paoli regarding a postcard depicting a stagecoach at the old turnpike toll gate and a copy of part of a story written by Trinkle about the toll gate; an August 1957 form letter about the first French Lick Music Festival signed by Joseph M. Curry; and three items from the West Baden Springs Hotel: a circa 1928 promotional letter and brochure signed by R.F. Hall, a print of a pen and ink drawing by an A. Luke for the November 9, 1974 Northwood of Indiana National Registry Banquet, and an undated oversize advertisement card with an image of the main entrance to the hotel. Folder 2 includes the following histories: "A Brief History of the Public Buildings of Orange County, Indiana," compiled in 1916 by Jesse McCoy Trinkle, Deputy County Auditor; "Pioneer Orange County," a paper read before the Orange County Historical Society by Miss Jennie Throop in December 1921; "Orange County's First White Citizen: A Day, Devoted to His Memory," report from Orange County Historical Society meeting held on November 26, 1922; "A Brief History of North West Township, Orange County, Indiana," essay written by Mary E. Chaillaux in 1922 and a biography of Lt. Homer Chaillaux written by Chaillaux in 1923; and "Dedicatory Services of Jane Throop Alcove in Paoli Library," a report regarding the November 22, 1923 event. Folder 3 includes additional histories compiled by Aaron Maris of Paoli, Indiana in the 1920s on topics that include the "First Schools of Paoli Township," "George Rogers Clark and His Capture of the Northwest," "Underground Railroad," "Friend (Quaker) Churches of Orange County," and his typewritten narrative regarding the early history of Orange County compiled in 1923 from material originally published in the 1884 Goodspeed Brothers and Company book History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Counties, Indiana . Also included is "Early Trails and Indian Treaties," a history by Alfred W. Bruner, first president of the Orange County Historical Society, and a three-page history of traces and roads compiled in 1924 by William Brooks, Sr. of Orleans, Indiana.

Orange County, Indiana was organized in 1816 and named for the county in North Carolina from which many of the early settlers emigrated from. Ten townships make up the county and the principal towns are Orleans, French Lick, West Baden and Paoli, the county seat. In November 1921, The Orange County Historical Society was formed to collect historical documents, letters, maps, pictures, relics, etc. related to the history of the county. Jesse M. Trinkle was appointed the first curator and was responsible for classifying and caring for the items donated.
