This collection includes 9 handwritten letters from Jesse L. Williams. Nearly all of the letters are addressed to Samuel B. Ruggles in New York, New York. The remaining letters are simply addressed 'Dear Sir'. The letters are a part of ongoing correspondence between the two men (several make reference to other earlier letters) and discuss various topics, including the ongoing Central Canal project.

Biographical or Historical Data:
Jesse L. Williams was born around 1807 in North Carolina and died on October 9, 1886 in Fort Wayne, Indiana at approximately 80 years old. He was amarried to Susan C. Williams and together they had two sons and a daughter. He worked as Civil Engineer, most notably on the Central Canal Project, which was designed to connect Indianapolis to the rest of the state and draw commerce into the center of Indiana. He maintained correspondence with Samuel B. Ruggles (1800-1881), a politician and lawyer in New York. He worked as a Canal Commissioner from 1839 to 1858.
