His ancestors included: Silas Hodges (1741-1804), a surgeon during the Revolutionary War; Francis LeBaron (1668-1704), a physician from France who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts; Degory Priest (ca. 1579-1621), a passenger on the Mayflower; and Jane Goodwin Austin (1831-1894), an author.
