Summary, etc.:
This collection includes a May 29, 1954 letter written by United States Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton and sent to Dr. Austin A. Cole, principal of New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana. In the letter, Minton thanks Cole for inviting him to the school's centennial celebration and states that it was "one of the happiest experience of my life." The collection also includes a photograph of Minton and Cole holding a portrait of Minton that was presented to the school by the school's retiring superintendent, Harry R. Davidson, during the May 27th banquet.

Biographical or Historical Data:
Austin Allen Cole was born on March 13, 1908 in Henry County, Indiana to Alva and Elizabeth Cole. He graduated from Milroy High School in Rush County, Indiana and received his bachelor's degree from Ball State University (1933), his masters from Peabody Teachers College (1938), and his Ph.D. from Columbia University (1942). Cole married Martha Jane Chattin on July 16, 1939 and they had two daughters. He was a teacher and served as principal at several Indiana schools, including New Albany High School from 1948 to 1954. Cole also worked in college admissions for Wabash College and Illinois Institute of Technology - Chicago. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and passed away at the age of 82 on October 18, 1990. Sherman Minton was born on October 20, 1890 in Georgetown, Indiana to John and Emma Minton. He graduated from New Albany High School in 1910, earned his law degree from Indiana University in 1915, and received an additional degree from Yale University in 1916. Minton was an officer during World War I and practiced law in New Albany. A Democrat, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1934, but lost his reelection bid in 1940. In 1941, Minton received an appointment to the White House staff as an administrative assistant in charge of coordinating military agencies. Later that same year, he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh District. On October 5, 1949, Minton was nominated by President Truman to the United States Supreme Court and was confirmed by the Senate on October 12th. He retired from the Court on October 15, 1956 due to ill health. Minton married Gertrude Gurtz on August 11, 1917 and they had three children.
