Biographical or Historical Data:
Saint Mother Theodore was born Anne-TheodoreGuerin on October 2, 1798 in Etables-sur-Mer in Brittany, France to Laurent and Isabelle Guerin. She entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruille-sur-Loir on August 18, 1823 and served at various parishes in France teaching, helping the poor, and caring for the sick. In 1840, at the request of the Bishop of Vincennes, Mother Theodore came to Indiana with a group of five Sisters of Providence to establish a school for pioneer children in the Indiana wilderness. She and the sisters opened their first academy on July 4, 1841 and this school continues today as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She continued to open schools and orphanages and minister to the poor in Indiana until her death on May 14, 1856. On October 15, 2006 at St. Peter's Square in Rome, Mother Theodore was canonized and became the first saint from Indiana. Her official designation by the Vatican is Saint Theodora and she is remembered as a woman of courage, determination and compassion.Sources:Post, Margaret Moore. "Hardship Was No Deterrent."
