This collection includes a letter written by Peter Shaffer on January 17, 1858 and sent to John and Mary Smith of Vandalia, Owen County, Indiana. In the letter he mentions that their "dear sister Eve Ann departed this life and died last October 13th."

Biographical or Historical Data:
The author of the letter in this collection may have been the Peter Shaffer listed on the 1860 census living in East Half, Owen County, Indiana. Born around 1835 in Pennsylvania, his occupation is listed as shoemaker and the letter begins "I take may [sic] seat in the shue [sic] shop to pen you a few lines". A Peter "Schaffer" of Owen County served in H Company, 14th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War and was killed on March 23, 1862 at Winchester, Virginia.Sources: Ancestry.com.
