Summary, etc.:
This collection contains a letter and two documents regarding Mathew M. Salisbury's service in the U.S. Civil War. The letter is from the Benjamin C. Wright & Co. and was sent on June 17, 1887 in response to a request by Mr. Salisbury for a copy of his discharge from Company K, 2nd Cavalry, 41st Regiment. His August 5, 1862 discharge paper was sent with the letter and is included in the collection. The second document is Salisbury's discharge paper from the 24th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery dated August 3, 1865 and given at Indianapolis, Indiana.

Biographical or Historical Data:
Mathew M. Salisbury was born on June 22, 1846 in Carroll County, Indiana to James and Elizabeth Salisbury. At the age of 15, he ran away to join the army during the U.S. Civil War. Salisbury mustered in on December 24, 1861 as a private with Company K, 2nd Cavalry, 41st Regiment Indiana Volunteers and served until August 5, 1862 when he was discharged for disability. Salisbury then enlisted with the 24th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery and mustered in on February 4, 1863. He served until the end of the war, spending time as a prisoner at Andersonville Prison in Georgia before being mustered out on August 3, 1865. Salisbury married Minerva Jane Cline on September 18, 1866 and they had 14 children. He was a carpenter by trade and passed away at the age of 89 on December 21, 1935.Sources:Ancestry.com. "Mathew M.
