In this duo's title story, twenty-eight-year-old Dave Bradford is halfway to achieving his dreams. He just wants to expand his ranch in Cebolla Basin a little more, so he can marry Sirral Drury. He plans a drive to take his stock to Wichita to sell. But J.J. Farman, owner of the J-Bar-J, the biggest ranch in the Basin, warns Bradford not to take the cattle across Texas Flat where Farman runs his cattle, even though it is open range. Bradford knows if he caves to Farman and his hired gunmen, Farman will not only control Texas Flat, but all the ranchers in the Basin. In the second story, Cole Rinneger can little afford to leave his ranch in Black Canon, New Mexico, but he feels he must when he receives a summons from his older brother Harvey, whom he hasn't seen in five years. Cole makes the ten-day trip to Rock Springs, where he is supposed to look up a woman by the name of Mattie Foster, whom he figures to be a saloon girl. On his arrival he comes to the aid of the town drunk who in return points him to Mattie Foster, a respectable businesswoman who has been hiding Harvey since he was shot after robbing the local bank. Cole wants to carry out his brother's dying wish to return the money to the bank, but there are plenty in Rock Springs who do not want that to happen.
