Sir Francis Chichester, at age 65, captured everyone's imagination as he set out in his 53 foot ketch, (Gipsy Moth IV) from Plymouth in September 1966 for Sydney and thence eastwards via Cape Horn back to Plymouth. In this --voyage he was beset by trouble and danger, nearly demasted, with self-steering gear destroyed, as well as capsized. However, Sir Francis never lost his hope or humour, determined to continue his voyage off the West Australian Coast, showing great courage to continue.
