Biographical or Historical Data:
Daniel Benjamin Luten was born December 26, 1869 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Lambert and Minnie Luten. He was the second oldest of five children. Luten graduated from the University of Michigan in 1894 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He worked for one year at the university as an instructor in Civil Engineering. Luten then became instructor in Architectural Engineering at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, where he worked until 1900, when he went into general engineering practice. He followed a specialty of the design and construction of reinforced concrete bridges from 1901 on, designing, building or supervising the construction of over 20,000 concrete bridges. Luten also published approximately one hundred articles. He was a member of many professional organizations and registered as a professional engineer in all states requiring registration. Luten was also a member of the Emergency Work Committee, Inc., a program of the Indianapolis Commission for Stabilization of Employment based in Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning December 5, 1930. He became vice-president and acting president in 1932, then president/chairman later that year but did not run for the office in 1933. He was the secretary in 1934, when the organization was disbanded. Its purpose had been to permit persons applying for relief to work for at least part of the relief, for public and semipublic institutions, and to devise a plan of stimulating employment of other unemployed persons. The organization was funded by a number of institutions and events, including the Community Fund, the City of Indianapolis, the Thanksgiving Day football game, and other sources found by the committee. George E. Gill, directory of the Indianapolis Employment Bureau, served as manager of the employment project of the committee. Luten married Edith Heath Hull on June 20, 1900 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They had four children: Granville H., Wilhelmina, Daniel B., and Mary F. Luten died July 3, 1946 in Indianapolis, and is buried in Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette, Indiana.Sources:Information found within the collection. Ancestry.com.
