This is the story of Tom Applegate, a Quaker pastor who decided that he could best serve humanity by teaching in the city. He grew up in Spiceland (in east central Indiana) and developed a passion for basketball. He became a basketball coach, first at the middle school level (at MacFarlane Middle School) and later at the high school level (at Dunbar High School) in Dayton, Ohio. Applegate strived to make sure that his players were academically solid and also helped prepare them to meet the challenges of life.
