This collection includes correspondence, telegrams, receipts, family photographs and newspaper clippings from Walter N. and Lizzie D. Carpenter in Indianapolis and Muncie, Indiana as well as Miami, Dade County, Florida ranging from 1887 to the 1980s.Also included are U.S. Department of Health publications regarding the control of infectious diseases and the role of women during World War I.

Biographical or Historical Data:
Walter Nathaniel Carpenter was born on September 7, 1865 to Edwin and Louisa H. Carpenter in Indianapolis, Indiana. He had two siblings: Carrie E. and Albert. Walter married Lizzie Dane Coburn on February 22, 1887 in Marion County, Indiana. Lizzie was born on February 22, 1865 to James Frederick Coburn and Lydia C. Lambert. In 1886, Lizzie was listed as a clerk in Indianapolis. The family lived in Woodruff Place, Indianapolis, Indiana. Walter and Lizzie had 5 children: Fred H., Paul C., Louise A., May, and Elanore C. Walter was a stenographer, typewriter and official reporter for the Delaware Circuit Court in Muncie, Indiana during the late 1880s and into the 1890s. In 1930, Walter was a reporter for the federal court system in Marion County, Indiana. Walter died on August 27, 1937 and Lizzie died on April 26, 1940. They are both buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Ownership and Custodial History:
This collection was received by Rare Books and Manuscripts as a donation from James C. Orem on January 22, 2004. The items belonged to the Louise Carpenter Stanfield family of Woodruff Place, Indianapolis, Indiana.
