This collection consists of a letter from Chase to Louis Prang, lithographer and art educator, concerning a portrait. Chase had painted a portrait of Prang already in 1884.

| Biographical or Historical Data: | William Merritt Chase was born November 1, 1849, in Williamsburg (now Ninaveh), Indiana. His parents were David and Sarah (Swaim) Chase. Chase studied art in Indianapolis, New York City, St. Louis, and in several European countries. He became known for his Impressionist portraits and landscapes, working in both oil paints and pastels. In 1886, Chase married Alice Gerson, with whom he had eight children. Chase died in 1916 in New York City. |
