Edwin L. Billings collection 1862-1863.
The collection contains a photocopy of a notebook of Captain Edwin L. Billings of the 57th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. In the book is a roster of soldiers in the regiment, accounts, discharge records, a journal with the activities of the regiment, and the weather for the day.

Biographical or Historical Data: | Edwin L. Billings was born in New York City on May 8 1824. On November 27, 1843, he was married to Delia Gilbert and they had eight children two of which survived him. He was in the marble business starting in Bridgeport, Connecticut later moving to Mazomanie, Wisconsin before establishing a household in Goshen. He first served in the 48th Indiana regiment and later accepted a captaincy in the 57th Regiment Indiana Infantry. He mustered out of the service on July 30, 1863. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Grand Army of the Republic, and of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died on April 4, 1888 at his son's residence in Hillsdale, Michigan. |
