This collection includes typed and signed and autographed and signed correspondence from various persons in the United States; business account books, teachers records, copy books and diaries from Nathaniel Preston; and naval account books, a diary and correspondence from William M. Preston, all ranging from 1821-1918 regarding banking, personal and navy business.

Biographical or Historical Data:
Nathaniel Preston was born on April 11, 1809 in Brookfield, Vermont to Charles and Sarah Flint Preston. He was one of at least nine children. He taught in Licking County, Ohio from 1831 to 1834, then at Vincennes, Indiana from 1835 to 1836, finally moving to Terre Haute, Indiana in 1836, teaching there from 1836-1837. From 1837 to 1842 he clerked at the State Bank of Indiana in Terre Haute and was cashier from 1842-1849. He married Charlotte Wood on May 19, 1843 in Vigo County, Indiana, and they had four children: William, Margaret, Nathaniel and John. He farmed from 1850 to 1871. Nathaniel died in November of 1871 and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Terre Haute.Information found within the collection."House built 100 years ago stands as pioneer landmark in Terre Haute".
