On the day that Italy joins World War II, 12-year-old Renato rides through town on his bike and meets Malena, a foreigner who has moved into town to be with her husband, but whose beauty inspires lust and jealously in the community. Renato goes off to fight in the war and his thoughts of Malena are what keep him going. When Malena's husband is killed in the war, she is taken to court, charged with adultery. Renato must find the courage within himself to defend her.
