Summary: Growing up in ramshackle house in Philadelphia, two orphan brothers become products of their environment. Philip remains timid and attempts to stay out of trouble, while his brother, Treat, becomes a violent and thieving scoundrel. However, when their paths cross with Harold, one of the underbelly's many criminals, Philip and Treat are irreconcilably torn apart.
