This collection consists of photocopies of pages from Charles B. Modesitt's personal account book in Terre Haute, Indiana ranging from 1836 to 1837, concerning the pricing and quantities of dry goods, such as clothing and fabric, educational materials like English readers, spelling books, and dictionaries, and other products which he purchased and from whom.

Biographical or Historical Data: | Charles Byrns Modesitt was a physician, businessman, and one of the first settlers in Vigo County, Indiana. He was born in 1784 to Charles and Frances (Byrns) Modesitt in Prince William County, Virginia where he attended Prince William College. Modesitt married his first wife, Rebecca Welton (1788-1830) on November 15, 1812 in Virginia and they had five children, including Caroline, George, James A., Frances Elizabeth (1813-1903) (who married Chauncey B. Warren and had 11 children), and Welton Morgan Modesitt (1815-). Dr. Modesitt and his family moved to Ohio in 1814, then on to Fort Harrison, Indiana in 1816. Modesitt built the first house in Terre Haute, a log cabin at Ohio Street. Rebecca Modesitt died on February 4, 1830. Three years later, Modesitt married his second wife, Elizabeth C.
