Biographical or Historical Data:
The Garden Club of Indiana was founded in 1930 as a part of the Indiana Federation of Art Clubs. The Federation was founded in 1926 by Mrs. H.B. Burnet as a statewide organization to foster appreciation and promotion of art in Indiana. The Garden Club of Indiana became an independent organization in 1932 as the Indiana Federation of Garden Clubs, and became the Garden Club of Indiana in 1935. The Club is a non-profit educational organization for people interested in horticulture, flower arranging, conservation, landscaping, and it has been involved in the beautification of highway roadsides, the improvement of the environment, and the sponsorship of the Junior Garden Club. Currently, there are approximately 2,000 members in The Garden Club of Indiana, Inc., with 86 member clubs in seven districts. The Garden Club of Indiana is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., with over 8,000 clubs and over 225,000 members from every state in the nation, plus National Plant Societies and International Affiliates. There are many junior, intermediate and high school gardeners as well. The fundamental objectives are expanded to meet the needs of today: community beautification; roadside development; good horticultural practices; litter control; aid in the protection of trees, shrubs, wildflowers and birds; and preservation and restoration of historic sites.
