William Hull was born June 24, 1753 in Derby, Connecticut to Captain Joseph Hull, III and Eliza Hull. He studied law at Yale and was graduated in 1772, passing the bar in 1775. He joined the Colonial Army during the American Revolution and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He married Sarah Fuller in 1781, with whom he had four (or ten) children. He was a judge and state senator in Massachusetts following the American Revolution. He was appointed the first Governor of the Michigan Territory on March 22, 1805. He was appointed Brigadier General of the Army of the Northwest in 1812. Due to poor communication and ill-prepared forces, he was unsuccessful at defending Detroit and assisting in a proposed invasion of Canada. He was court-martialed and condemned to death but was pardoned by the president and returned to his home in Newton, Massachusettes. He wrote several books explaining what had happened and trying to clear his name. He died in Newton, Massachusettes on November 29, 1825 and is buried at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusettes."Hull, William" Genealogy.
