Workingmen's Institution collection 1909

Summary: This 20-page, typed list, including title page, gives extracts of the books and pamphlets in a special library at the Workingmen's Institute, New Harmony, Indiana. The list was compiled by Rena Reese in March 1909. Part I, which is six pages, has Indiana imprints before 1877. Part 2, consisting of 13 pages, has other American imprints before 1877. One of the earliest pamphlets was published by the Rappites in 1824 entitled: "Thoughts on the destiny of man, particularly with reference to the present times, by the Harmony Society of Indiana." Also listed is William Maclure's "essay on the formation of rocks" in 1832. Robert Owen's daughter Jane Dale Owen Fauntleroy published a circular about the New Harmony Seminary for Young Ladies about 1844. In 1850, Robert Dale Owen published "Brief practical treatise on the construction and management of plank roads." Charles Nordhoff's "Communistic societies of the United States, from personal visit and observation" was published in 1875. Four pages list the publications by Robert Owen, including "Debate on the evidence of Christianity between Robert Owen and Alexander Campbell," in 1829. On September 29, 1862, Robert Owen sent a letter to President Lincoln about the policy of emancipation of the slaves "which is said to have had the greatest influence in determining the mind of the president."
