This collection includes a hand-written journal and photograph of the journal's author, John Hise. The journal begins in April 1854, although there are short summaries of the months January, February and March. It's final entry is on January 1, 1860. There are entires for nearly every day, beginning with a description of the day's weather. Typically, entries describe work done, supplies purchased, trips to town and products sold in town or to other residents of the area. Often the entires describe visitors to the area, their origin and destination.

Biographical or Historical Data: | John Hise was a farmer in the Jennings County area of Indiana in the mid-19th century. He lived with his wife Elizabeth and made frequent visits to Vernon and Butlersville, Indiana. His journal mentions several local residents and travelers through the area, many going between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. He also had a brother in New Orleans, and his son eventually moved to that area. |
