Christopher B. Coleman collection 1932-1942.
This collection contains an eight page typewritten copy of a January 1932 speech given by Dr. Christopher Coleman regarding the history of Indiana. The speech discusses people and events that helped shape Indiana and includes brief sketches of George Rogers Clark and Abraham Lincoln. The collection also has a carbon copy of an October 27, 1933 letter sent by Coleman to Matilda Denny Gibson thanking her for a copy of a note from "Suco-co-tash" by Major Denny that included a detail about a meeting between George Rogers Clark and Bohengehalus. A January 24, 1942 typewritten memo by Coleman regarding an official note certifying that a flag flown at the Indiana State House during the launch of the Defense Bond campaign on January 15, 1942 was the same flag flown from the United States House of Representatives on the day President Roosevelt requested that Congress declare war on Japan is included as well.

Biographical or Historical Data: | Indiana historian Christopher Bush Coleman was born on April 24, 1875 at Springfield, Illinois to Louis and Jenny Coleman. He earned his A.B. degree from Yale University in 1896, his B.D. from University of Chicago in 1899, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1914. He was associated with Butler University from 1900 to 1920, serving as a history professor for 18 years and vice-president of the college for 7 years. In 1920, he became head of the history and political science department at Allegheny College and then returned to Indiana in 1924 to become the Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau, a position he held for 20 years. He also served as the Indiana State Librarian from 1936 to 1942 and was involved in a number of historical organizations, including the Indiana Historical Society, the George Rogers Clark Memorial Commission of Indiana (1927-1940) and the George Rogers Clarke Sesquicentennial Commission (1928-1935). Dr. Coleman married Juliet J. Brown on June 25, 1901 and they had two daughters. He passed away at the age of 69 on June 25, 1944. Sources: Ancestry.com. "Christopher B. Coleman."
