Summary, etc.: In the midst of a perilous winter, a mysterious stranger arrives at Jacob and Sarah's isolated Kansas farm. The stranger is John Whiting, the father who abandoned Jacob and his mother when Jacob was a young child, and Jacob is tormented by the feelings of resentment and neglect that his father's return brings to the surface in him.
