Summary:

This collection contains typed copies of letters that Joseph Bailly sent to Jarmin Pothier, Toussaint Pothier, and Angus MacKintosh (1800-1801); Charles E. Hambleton's Civil War muster roll, promotion, and discharge documents (1861-1864); a letter from West Virginia Adjutant General Isaac H. Duval regarding a medal awarded to Major Hambleton for his service in the Civil War (May 8, 1867); a certified copy of Marie Louise and Charles Hambleton's November 23, 1869 marriage license (November 23, 1921); typewritten copies of correspondence between John O. Bowers of Gary, Indiana and Edward C. Bailly of New York City regarding the Joseph Bailly family (1930-1931); a letter sent to Edward C. Bailly from Mrs. L.P. Brock of Ionia, Michigan regarding Joseph's first wife, Angelique McGulpin (November 10, 1930); a letter sent by Edward Bailly to the Indiana State Library regarding claims by Frances R. Howe in her book, Story of a French Homestead in the Old Northwest along with a small impression of the Bailly coat of arms from Alexis Bailly's watch fob (May 28, 1935); Olga Mae Schiemann's typewritten comments about Joseph Bailly's 1822 to 1835 fur trade account books (August, 1960); and a hand drawn rendering of the Bailly coat of arms by Mary Conley (March 28, 1972).The collection also includes Major Hambleton's leather document case (undated); cabinet card photographs of Marie Louise and Charles Hambleton by C.A. Winsor of Galesburg, Illinois (ca. 1880s); a cabinet card photograph of Charles Hambleton by C.D. Mosher of Chicago for his "Memorial Portraits" project (ca. 1880s); two additional photographs of Hambleton (ca. 1900s); and a photograph of Art Henderson, Maude Chas, and Edward C. Bailly (?) on the terrace of the Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood by the Sea, Florida (February, 1927).

Biographical or Historical Data:	Honore Gratien Joseph Bailly de Messein was born April 7, 1774 in Varennes, Quebec. Known as Joseph Bailly, he was one of the first white settlers in northern Indiana when he established a fur trading post in the Calumet Region in 1822. By the time of his death on December 21, 1835, Joseph had acquired title to over 2,000 acres of land in the Calumet Region.Joseph's first son, Alexis, was born on December 14, 1798 at his trading post on the Grand River in what is now Michigan. Alexis also became a fur trader and was a pioneer settler of Minnesota. His daughter, Marie Louise, was born July 4, 1845. She married Charles E. Hambleton on November 20, 1869. Charles was born in Alliance County, Ohio on April 7, 1839. He served in the Union Army in Company B, Second Regiment, West Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. This regiment was made up of men from southwestern Ohio and Hamleton enlisted as a first lieutenant and mustered out with the rank of major. He died on January 10, 1914 and Marie Louise on October 21, 1934.Alexis' son, Frank Cory, was born on Jul 23, 1860 in Wabasha County, Minnesota. He married Margaret Cashman (1861-1895) on October 20, 1885. Their son, Edward, was born on July 26, 1886. Edward was a 1906 graduate of Columbia University and a 1909 graduate of its law school. He became a prominent lawyer and businessman in New York City. He married Elizabeth Donovan (1881-1982) on September 30, 1911 and they had three children.
