Summary, etc.: Twelve-year-old Joseph helps his family to survive when the natives of Saipan are caught in the crossfire between the Japanese soldiers and the American troops at the end of World War II. Based on historical events on the South Pacific island of Saipan during World War II, this story unfolds through the eyes of Joseph, the son of the Chamorro chief, and, his half-Japanese cousin, Kento. For Joseph the war brings mounting pressure to take responsibility for the survival of his family during the invasion. Forced to experience the unimaginable horrors of Suicide Cliff, the boys begin to learn the true practices of a warrior.
