|Biographical or Historical Data:|| Stephenson Underwear Mills began as the A.C. Staley Manufacturing Company. Alexander C. Staley started the company in South Bend, Indiana, in 1855. In 1888, C.B. Stephenson joined the company. The company grew, acquiring the Porcelain Ware Factory (1896) and the Indiana Paper Mill (1904). In 1907, the company was reorganized and incorporated as the Stephenson Underwear Mills. The company manufactured blankets, men's sweaters, and men's woolen underwear. The last remaining building of the complex, located at 322 East Colfax Avenue, is on the National Register of Historic Places (1995) and privately owned.
