Wayne County collection, 1828-1957, undated

Summary: This collection contains several items related to education in Wayne County, Indiana, including Joshua Williams's "Articles of Agreement" contract to teach school in the county for twelve months starting on November 3, 1828, photostat copies of articles of agreement to teach school for William Boroughs in 1835 and Vernon Ham 1837, a photostat copy of James Donelan's attendance records for his students in District 5 from 1849, Louisa A. Culbertson's teaching certificate signed by examiner A.C. Shortridge at Centerville on March 21, 1861, and a copy of "Extract from the Reminiscences of Hiram Hadley," Hadley's remembrances regarding Richmond schools from 1920. The collection also includes an 1891 brochure from the St. Stephen's Hospital Medical Board, a program from the February 11, 1909 Lincoln Centenary Commemoration held in Richmond, Indiana under the direction of the Young Men's Business Club, a postcard with the seal of the 100th anniversary of Richmond attached to the front and sent in March 1940 to C.B. Coleman, and an undated lithograph of the Friends Boarding School (now Earlham College) printed by Gibson and Company (Cincinnati, Ohio). Other items in the collection related to the history of the county include a copy of "Early Wayne County and Activities of the Waymire Family Connected Therewith," an address given August 18, 1928 before the Old Settlers of Wayne County at Centerville by Dr. William M. Reser; a copy of a brief history of the Social Service Bureau of Richmond written in 1928; a September 28, 1949 letter sent by Dorothy Riker of the Indiana Historical Bureau to the Richmond Furniture Manufacturing Company and the company's handwritten response regarding the history of the business; copies of L.S. Bowman's "The So-Called 'Hagerstown Fair'" from April 1955 and "Memoirs of the Early Schools of Hagerstown" from July 1957; and copies of Bowman's undated stories "Animal Instinct Versus Human Intellect or Man Matches Wits With a Hog," "A Jury Consisting of Eleven Chicken Thieves and One Damned Liar Sat in Judgment of a Man Being Prosecuted for the Theft of a Few Chickens," "The Henry Crull and Martin Ulrich Families," and "The Old Vinegar Keg."

Biographical or Historical Data:	Wayne County, Indiana is located in east-central Indiana and was established by the territorial legislature in 1810. In February 1805, Richard Rue, George Holman and sons Joseph and William, Joseph and Mary (Rue) Cox, Thomas McCoy, William Blunt, and Patrick O'Hara came from Kentucky and became the first white settlers in what is now the Elkhorn and Abington areas of the county. The first permanent settlers on the present site of Richmond, the county seat, were John Smith and Jeremiah Cox, North Carolina Quakers who arrived in 1806 via the Quaker Settlements in Western Ohio. Bertsch on 1937/09/27, Merritt Harrison on 1935/07/19, and others. One item also received as a records transfer from the Indiana Historical Bureau on 1928/09/05.
