Summary: This collection contains correspondence, clippings, documents and notes ranging from 1969 to 1977 regarding Wilfrid J. Ullrich's work as a senator in the Indiana General Assembly. The bulk of the correspondence is from Indiana residents stating their support or opposition to bills being considered during the 1977 legislative session. Ullrich received the largest number of letters concerning the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (E.R.A.); the creation of an Indiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners proposed in Senate Bill 411; and legislation proposed through House Bill (H.B.) 1405 concerning the freedom of choice in medical treatment and more specifically the legalization of Laetrile. A small number of correspondence regarding other issues, such as pari-mutuel betting (H.B. 1049), the "Amish Milk" bill (H.B. 1670), and retired teachers pensions (S.B. 330), are included as well.The collection also has correspondence and documents from the Public Assess To Governmental Decision Making Process Interim Study Committee (1976) responsible for drafting an Indiana Open Door or "Sunshine" law (1976) and from the Senate Public Health Committee regarding H.B. 1405 and the hearings that were held in March 1977. Testimony in support of H.B. 1405 was heard at the hearing on the 15th and testimony from those opposed to the bill were heard on the 22nd. The "Treat Cancer with Science not Emotion!" documents contain the information presented by the speakers opposed to the legalization of Laetrile. Though the majority of the correspondence received by Ullrich was in support of H.B. 1405, he was one four state senators who voted against it.

Biographical or Historical Data:	Wilfrid John Ullrich was born May 6, 1908 in Aurora, Indiana to William and Edna Irene Ullrich. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree of pharmaceutical chemisty in June 1929 and owned and operated the Ullrich Drugstore in Aurora. He married Eleanor Irene Klimek (1907-2001) on September 10, 1929 and they had six children. He was a civic leader and served many local and state organizations, including the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, and Dearborn County Mental Health Association. He also served as director of the First National Bank at Aurora, Aurora Industrial Development, and the Southeastern Indiana Economic Opportunity Corp. A Democrat, he was known as an authority in the fields of education, health care, and penal reform and served as a member of the Indiana Senate from 1963 until his death on June 8, 1977.Sources:Ancestry.com.
