This collection includes the scrapbook of Clarence R. Rhodes containing material ranging from 1875 to 1942. The numerous mounted newspaper clippings concern the administrations of President Grover Cleveland and President Benjamin Harrison and stories about their families, cabinet members and other political appointees. Histories and stories about a variety of other topics include criminal cases, the U.S. Civil War, and the centennial celebration of President George Washington's inauguration. The scrapbook also has several loose items, including an October 11, 1875 funeral notice for Mrs. Sarah E. Snell, wife of Col. Thomas Snell; an August 9, 1927 invitation to a dinner held at the Columbia Club in honor of Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh; postcards from Gettysburg sent to Mr. Rhodes in 1938; a May 28, 1939 certificate of membership in the First A.R. Presbyterian Church of Tampa, Florida for Samuel S. Rhodes; 1939 cover of a Columbia Club menu with a list of 25 year members printed on reverse side; front page of an invitation to the Columbia Club's February 19, 1940 Anniversary Beefsteak Dinner and Stag Party; a September 9, 1940 photograph of Helen Hohn on her wedding day; obituaries of Samuel S. Rhodes from July 1940; and other miscellaneous correspondence, receipts and newspaper clippings.

Clarence R. Rhodes was born on September 13, 1873 at Clinton, Illinois to Samuel S. and Mary (Conklin) Rhodes. The Rhodes moved to Indianapolis, Indiana when Clarence was a small child and his father founded the S.S. Rhodes and Son hardware store in 1877. His father retired around 1915 and Clarence Rhodes continued to operate the family business until his retirement in 1942. He married Gertrude Lenore Henry on July 2, 1907 and they had one daughter.
