The collection consists of autographed and signed and printed and signed legal documents and personal correspondence between the Holman and Porter families in Indiana from 1830 to 1881.

Biographical or Historical Data:
George Holman was born on Feb. 11, 1762 in Maryland. He was raised by his uncle, Henry Holman, who moved his family from Pennsylvania to Kentucky. Holman was captured and adopted by Indians. In 1804, George Holman moved to Wayne County, Indiana, where he bought land near the present-day Richmond, Indiana. He and his wives, Elizabeth Jane (died 1822) and Sarah McDonald, whom he married in 1824) had 12 children: Joseph, William, John, Benjamin, Joel, Patsey, Rebecca, Sarah, Greenup [Granup], Jesse, Catherine (who married Adam Porter) and Isaac. Holman died May 5, 1859 and is buried in the Elkhorn Cemetery in Richmond.Adam Porter was born in Bath County, Virginia in 1805 to Robert Peter Porter and his wife. With his father and family, Adam moved to Indiana, settling in Franklin County (now Fayette County) near Connersville, on Dec. 15, 1815. In April of 1827, Porter bought land in Carroll County. He married Catherin Holman (daughter of George Holman) on April 1, 1830 in Carroll County, and they had 15 children; including Robert Holman, Eliza, Alice, George Washington, Margaret Elizabeth, Franklin Tivis, Sarah, Emma Catherine, William Allen and Martha Ann.
