This collection contains papers concerning Daniel Hill and James T. C. Watson ranging from 1861 to 1865 regarding their service with the Union army during the U.S. CIvil War. The documents include a record for Hill's military service; discharge papers for Daniel Hill in 1862, 1864, and 1865; a letter to Watson acknowledgement of Special Order 60; discharge papers for James T. Biographical or Historical Data:
Daniel F. Hill was born in Hendricks County, Indiana around 1840. He was enrolled as a student until the U.S. Civil War began. Hill served in Company I, 11th Indiana Regiment, first enlisting as a sergeant on August 31, 1861. He was discharged on November 3, 1862 for "general debility, resulting from disease contracted in the service." Hill worked as a merchant until he reenlisted on May 18, 1864 in the 132nd Indiana Regiment for a little over three months. He enlisted a third time on February 21, 1865 as a captain in Company G, 148th Indiana Regiment and was discharged a final time on September 5, 1865. James T. C. Watson was born in Charlestown, Indiana around 1840. He worked as a salesman until he enlisted in the Union army as a private in Company C, 8th Illinois Regiment on July 25, 1861. Watson was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in 1862 and was discharged September 28, 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana.Sources:Items in the collection.
