Emil Dietz correspondence 1898-1939.
This collection includes correspondence and clippings received by Emil Dietz ranging from 1898-1939. The personal correspondence consist of letters thanking Dietz for his donations of books or artwork to local libraries, schools, or individuals, as well as letters from personal friends. The majority of the letters are sent from Frederick Schnell and his wife Wilma Schnelll, who lived in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. They discuss book, art and cultural recommendations as well as personal life of the two families and Frederick Schnell's work as a teacher. The correspondence also makes reference to the Great Depression as well as the events preceding World War II. The rest of the papers consist of magazine clippings discussing astronomy.The collection also includes business correspondence between Dietz, various companies and individuals concerning property purchases, patent holdings, and industry regulations and accidents. The newspaper clippings focus on labor strikes and working conditions in Indianapolis.

Biographical or Historical Data: | Emil Dietz was born in Rohrschach, Switzerland, on February 2, 1864, to Frederick Dietz and Fredericks Englemann and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1869. He settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was naturalized as an American citizen. He worked as a book keeper for the Fred Dietz Company that manufactured wooden boxes and trucks before becoming the manager of the company until 1910. Throughout his career, he made multiple patents for wooden box construction as well as factory truck construction. He also pursued reading, art collecting and astronomy as hobbies throughout his life. Dietz died on September 27, 1947, in Indianapolis and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
