|General Note:|| John Worth Kern was a Democratic United States Senator from Indiana. While the title was not official, he is considered to be the first Senate majority leader, while serving concurrently as chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus. He was born in Alto, [Howard County] Indiana, and died in Asheville, North Carolina. He held office from 1911-1917, when he resigned. Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
