Encantadas
Summary, etc.: Billy Budd is the story of a young sailor sentenced to death for accidentally killing an officer. Completed a few months before Melville's death, this carefully constructed tragedy was not published until 1924. The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles, contains 10 fictional sketches set in the lonely Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. Originally published in The Piazza Tales, Melville uses these sketches to present the themes of the power of evil and isolation.
Subject: American fiction > 19th century.
